The fall was busy with late harvest\, preserving food for the winter\, and preparing for the next year. One of these fall jobs was to make the soap for all of next years laundry\, washing and yearly baths. \nJoin Historic Cook Diane Schwindt as she teaches you all about the soap making process. Learn how a lard press was used to make soap\, try your hand with a traditional mangling board\, and feel the weight and warmth of a heavy sad (flat) iron. DESCRIPTION:“The Natural Secrets of Long Island” presentation with Naturalist John Turner\, a review of the plants\, animals\, and natural landscapes that make Long Island the special place it is.\n\nJohn Turner has been an environmental educator and advocate for nearly 50 years. He has given hundreds of talks and programs and led nature walks on a wide range of natural history and environmental topics for many organizations. John has written articles that have appeared in numerous newsletters and magazines including Defenders\, Birder’s World\, Long Island Forum\, Bird Watcher’s Digest\, Networking Magazine\, and The Conservationist. He is the author of a popular Long Island nature guide “Exploring the Other Island: A Seasonal Nature Guide to Long Island” (2nd Edition). John was co-founder of the Long Island Pine Barrens Society\, a group whose mission is to promote education\, to advocate for the protection of Long Island’s drinking water and to preserve open spaces especially in the Pine Barrens. John currently works a senior policy advisory for Senior Policy Advisor.\n—\nOctober 23 at 6:30 p.m in the Naugles Barn.
