In years gone by, the running stitch was used to piece together everything from clothing to quilts. There is very little documentation from the past about how to achieve this stitch because “everyone knew how to do it.” The hand sewn running stitch was a skill passed down from mother to daughter and can be very portable, relaxing, and sometimes more accurate for more intricate blocks.
This particular block has been called Russian Sunflower and Sunburst.
Pictured is a quilt dating to the mid to late 1800’s, from the Hallockville collection, utilizing this block pattern.
Join instructor, Connie Klos, in exploring two easy hand piecing techniques, including the running stitch and English Paper Piecing for accurately and easily creating this quilt block.
